SYDNEY — Fresh from settling a bitter tax dispute with Australia’s powerful mining sector, Prime Minister Julia Gillard turned her attention Monday to one of the country’s most contentious issues: refugees.
Gillard is expected to release a new border-protection policy this week, part of a promise to address public concern about the rising number of refugee boats entering Australian waters from Indonesia.
She held a special meeting with senior ministers Monday and pledged to make an announcement by Thursday.
