You’ve got to cook up something out of the ordinary to win Denver Health’s annual Hot Rocks Griller Challenge, and ground Kobe veal cheek sliders dressed with caramelized shallots, gorgonzola aioli and smoked sea salt did it this year for Troy Guard, the owner/chef at Larimer Square’s acclaimed TAG restaurant. The Cubano sliders by Tyler Wiard of Elway’s Cherry Creek took second prize while Sean Yontz of Tambien and Sketch came in third with a concoction made from pork belly, panela and tomatillo jam.

In 2008, Lannie Garrett was among the Triumphant Women honored by Excelsior Youth Center. As part of her continuing support, she made opening night for her new cabaret show, Great Women of Song: From Billie to Bette, a benefit for Excelsior programs and services. The Colorado Nurses Foundation staged the 25th edition of its Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Human Caring at the Renaissance Denver Hotel, honoring Debra Burns, Darryl Evertsen, Karren Kowalski, Cyndy Krening, Carol Schoffstall and Olinda Spitzer at a dinner emceed by 9News anchor Kim Christiansen.
