A 21-year-old man who was fatally shot Sunday in Broomfield was passing a gun around with two friends at a neighborhood Fourth of July party when it fired, a neighbor said Wednesday.
“This was a pure accident. It was foolish kids handing a gun around, and it just went off,” said Marjorie Lona, who has lived on West 134th Avenue for 22 years. “This whole neighborhood was devastated to lose one of our own.”
Anthony Varra of Westminster died at the scene of the shooting, which happened about 5:30 p.m. Sunday on the 3000 block of West 134th Avenue, according to Adams County Coroner James Hibbard.
He ruled the death a homicide caused by a single gunshot wound to the head.
Broomfield police originally reported that they had responded to a possible suicide Sunday. On Wednesday police said the death was not a suicide and there were trying to determine who fired the fatal shot.
