Going out for a walk in hot weather can be tolerable for a happy puppy like Sheeba when there's a friend like Kelsey Schwager nearby to pour on some cooling water at the right moment Wednesday in Fort Collins. Temperatures today should not be as high as they have been in recent days, but forecasters expect the mercury to rise during the weekend.

For the first time in nearly two years, Denver could get a 100-degree day Saturday.

“We are predicting a high of 99, but we are flirting with record temperatures. It is possible we will hit 100,” said Kyle Fredin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Several Denver TV stations are forecasting 100 degrees.

The last time Denver hit 100 degrees was Aug. 2, 2008, and the record for July 17 is 101 degrees, set in 1971.

Fredin said a lot depends on cloud cover. Clear skies would allow temperatures to rise higher, but the weather service is predicting partly cloudy skies after a clear morning.

There is a 10 percent chance of storms in the afternoon.

“One-hundred degrees is pretty rare,” Fredin said. “It doesn’t happen every summer, for sure.”

The National Weather Service Heat Safety tips remind people never to leave children unattended in a parked car even with the windows down. In the first 10 minutes the temperature inside a parked car can go up nearly 20 degrees. The high temperatures inside parked cars can also be dangerous for pets and adults.

After Saturday things will start to cool down slightly.

The National Weather Service expects highs in the mid-90s for next week.
