DENVER—A term-limited state senator from Pueblo is taking over the Colorado Lottery.

Democratic Sen. Abel Tapia was named the lottery’s new director Friday. He takes over Aug. 1.

Tapia will resign his Senate seat when he starts work for the Lottery, so Pueblo Democrats will be able to appoint a short-term replacement until Tapia’s term ends in a few months.

Two Republicans are also running for the seat, with the nominee to be determined in the Aug. 10 primary.

Tapia was elected to the Colorado House in 1999 and to the state Senate in 2003. Tapia’s bills included a failed plan to Tapia add a new keno game to the Lottery’s offerings to help fund higher education. The plan also called for horse racing in Pueblo.
