The Meadow Creek Fire 10 miles north of Newcastle in Garfield County grew by 200 acres Sunday night and has now consumed 908 acres of heavy forest, according to firefighters.

A lightning strike on June 26 caused the fire, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management group.

Currently there are 93 firefighters assigned to the fire including two hotshot hand crews and two helicopters.

Because of safety concerns, the crews continue to work on the fire’s edge. The fire is expected to continue moving to the north and northeast.

Two areas are closed because of the fire – the Hadley Gulch Trail and the Main Elk Creek Research Natural Area.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
