Before there was Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, there was teen girl band The Runaways, featuring Jett on guitar and Cherie Currie at the mic. This is their saga of rock ‘n’ burst and burnout. Kristen Stewart leaves Jett a brooding mystery. But Dakota Fanning swings tellingly between wild thing and exploited kid as 15-year-old sex kitten Currie. Impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) tweaks and torments the girls in the band with freakish aplomb in Floria Sigismondi’s directorial debut. R. 1 hour, 42 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Cop Out”

“Cop Out” teams Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as the likable, by-their- own-book cops Monroe and Hodges. Hodges calls his role-playing “homage.” But “Cop Out” is a tribute not to the grit of certain police dramas but to the glib grousing of 1980s cop-buddy flicks. The plot’s ladled to get to the banter, and Monroe and Hodges have some of the pleasing give-and-take dynamics of Abbott and Costello, though the two are at their funniest with a foil like Seann William Scott. Toward the end of “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers,” you begin to realize just how much four decades of history owe to one man. If Ellsberg hadn’t leaked top-secret CIA documents to the press and Congress, the Vietnam War might have continued indefinitely, public sentiment wouldn’t have finally turned against the conflict, the Watergate break-in wouldn’t have happened and Nixon wouldn’t have resigned.
