PANMUNJOM, Korea — In a show of support today for South Korea, four months after one of its warships sank in a mysterious attack, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the infamous no-man’s land that has divided the Korean Peninsula for more than a half-century.
It was believed to be the first time two high-ranking U.S. Cabinet secretaries have toured the Demilitarized Zone simultaneously.
Clinton and Gates were set to meet their Korean counterparts for wide-ranging talks and to participate in an event marking the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.
The United States and South Korea also announced Tuesday that they would hold “large-scale” military exercises, starting this weekend, in an attempt to deter further hostile acts by the isolationist government of North Korea.
