Denver police have two people in custody after a brief high-speed chase Sunday afternoon.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the chase started around 1 p.m. when officers went to the 3200 block of East Pontiac Street for a call of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found a vehicle matching a description that was fleeing from the scene, and began a pursuit that crossed through a Wal-Mart parking lot on 7800 Smith Road where the SUV rammed a patrol car that it encountered.

After the SUV left the Wal-Mart parking lot through an exit toward 35th Avenue, a police car was able to use the pursuit intervention technique to spin and stop the SUV.

The two suspects inside the SUV were taken to the hospital to be evaluated as a precaution, but have been arrested.

A gun was recovered from the vehicle.

No one was reported injured in the pursuit, and the shots fired that were initially reported did not hurt anyone.

An investigation is ongoing.
