CHEYENNE, Wyo.—Environmental objections aren’t holding up plans for 2,000 oil and gas wells in southwest Wyoming following a court ruling in Washington, D.C.
Several environmental groups challenged a 2007 U.S. Bureau of Land Management decision allowing the drilling. About 400 wells have been drilled so far.
The drilling is expected to produce enough gas to heat 19 million homes for a year and generate nearly $1 billion in taxes and royalties.
A district court judge sided with the BLM last year and an appeals court in Washington, D.C., has upheld that ruling.
Petroleum Association of Wyoming President Bruce Hinchey says a ruling shutting down drilling would have been a problem for companies making major investments in the area.
