On the Rocks is a cliche of a name for a bar and grill. But when the rocks are the red sandstone plates jutting skyward at the Arrowhead Golf Club like a half-buried stegosaurus, the name hits a hole in one.
It’s not just golfers who enjoy a bite here, where the fare is what one expects for a fueling post along the links: Mexican combos, sandwiches, burgers and salads among the offerings.
Locals and crosstown visitors come for the food with an awesome view. They might begin with a spinach and artichoke dip, a tangy starter to stimulate the appetite.
They sip and dip. They chat about the velvet-antlered buck, the fleeting red fox or the stunt-flying broad-tailed hummingbirds they spotted on the drive in.
Always, though, the conversation seems to return to those crimson sentinels, rising from rolling hills of green.
Along might come mahi-mahi fish tacos, chicken marsala or fish and chips. On one late afternoon, the kitchen ran out of lemon-pepper shrimp skewers and bourbon praline sundaes.
But who cares? Prices hover around $10 and might reach $14. The staff is at once laid-back and prompt. The drink options are sufficient.
All that and, as the cliche goes, a million-dollar view.
Arrowhead Golf Club is about 7 miles southwest of the intersection of U.S. 85 and Titan Parkway. Watch for the restaurant’s sign on Roxborough Drive near the entrance to Roxborough Park’s residential community.
