A flash flood warning for the mountains and all of southern Colorado is in effect until midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The potential slow-moving showers and thunderstorms lingers across the region through Thursday, forecasters said.

Three to 5 inches could fall in a short period.

A flash flood watch is in effect until midnight for parts of central and northern Colorado, including the San Juan Valley, Cañon City and El Paso and Jefferson counties, where there is a risk for rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches per hour, according to the Weather Service.

The metro area has a 40 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and a 30 percent chance on Thursday, as temperatures approach 90 degrees. A high of 95 degrees is expected Saturday.

More rain after nearly two weeks of monsoonal weather increases the risk for rock and mudslides , forecasters warned.

U.S. Forest Service Ranger Jon Morrissey told the Associated Press that 12 vehicles were trapped Saturday by two mudslides between Leadville and Buena Vista when a six-hour rainstorm hit the area.

Chaffee County search and rescue teams used all-terrain vehicles Monday to drive out some of the campers who were above the slides.

Morrissey says campers told him the mudslides sounded like a roaring river. The Forest Service plans to use an excavator and front-end loader Thursday to free the rest of the vehicles.
