SEATTLE — The Mariners fired manager Don Wakamatsu on Monday, more than halfway through a season that began with a boosted roster and hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

“New leadership is needed, and it is needed now,” general manager Jack Zduriencik said.

The Mariners started the day at 42-70, the second-worst record in the American League. Daren Brown, the manager of Triple-A Tacoma for the last three-plus seasons, took over on an interim basis.

Seattle also fired bench coach Ty Van Burkleo, pitching coach Rick Adair and performance coach Steve Hecht.

• The Mariners placed shortstop Jack Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hand and recalled infielder Chris Woodward from Triple- A Tacoma.

Reds acquire Edmonds

CINCINNATI — The Reds got Jim Edmonds from the Brewers for Chris Dickerson in a trade of outfielders.

Edmonds, who batted .286 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 73 games for the Brewers, was in the starting lineup in center field, going 0-for-4 in a 7-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Dickerson has missed most of the season because of a broken bone in his right hand.

Silva has heart procedure

SAN FRANCISCO — Cubs pitcher Carlos Silva underwent a procedure called cardiac ablation to correct a problem with his heart rate.

The Cubs expect Silva, who is 10-5 with a 3.92 ERA, to begin light physical activity this week and start a throwing program early next week.

• First baseman Derrek Lee left the team to be with his ill grandfather in Sacramento, Calif.
