Grand Junction police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the Colorado River Wednesday night.

The man was identified as Willard Michael “Mike” Bobbitt, 36, from Montrose.

Police are not releasing the manner of death at this time, but the coroner’s office today ruled the death a homicide.

Jacob Richards, with Housing First! No More Deaths!, told the Grand Junction Sentinel that a pair of transients Wednesday morning pulled a blood-soaked sleeping bag from a nearby section of the river before Bobbitt’s body was found.

Further information in unavailable as the investigation continues, but the Sentinel reported that police called the death suspicious early in the investigation based on the position of certain items and the body itself.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras, said the area where the body was found is near a popular walking and biking trail.

Police want people in the area who saw anything suspicious this week to contact Grand Junction Police at 970-242-6707.
