GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Williams Production RMT Co. has agreed to pay $423,300 in a settlement with Colorado regulators over benzene contamination in a spring.
The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission approved the settlement Thursday.
The commission had concluded that landowner Ned Prather’s spring was contaminated due to natural-gas drilling activities, particularly a leaking liner used in a pit to contain water laced with hydrocarbons and chemicals.
Williams disputes that it caused the contamination but says it agreed to the settlement to avoid spending more resources on the investigation.
The commission says Williams spent $9.8 million investigating the contamination and on basin-wide efforts to enhance fluid management.
