Stockholder meetings are planned Sept. 17 to consider issues in the proposed merger of United and Continental airlines, according to documents filed this week with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The two airlines announced in May they would consolidate into the world’s largest carrier. Officials hope to close the deal by year’s end.

United stockholders will meet in Elk Grove, Ill., to vote on issuing shares of United common stock to Continental stockholders. Continental stockholders will meet in Houston to consider adoption of the merger agreement.

There have been legal challenges to the merger. A group of passengers wants to stop the merger, contending airfares would increase and competition would decrease. A class-action lawsuit to block the merger was filed by several Continental investors. A settlement has been reached with them. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post; AP file photo
