DENVER—The coroner has ruled that the death of an inmate in the new Denver jail was a homicide.

The Denver coroner released the autopsy report Friday in the July 9 death of 56-year-old Marvin Booker, who was shocked with a Taser device during a scuffle with sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Gale says the ruling means another person caused the death, not that a crime occurred.

Denver police are conducting a criminal investigation into Booker’s death and will present the findings to the district attorney.

The coroner’s report says Booker’s death was caused by cardiorespiratory arrest during physical restraint. The coroner says deputies had their body weight on his back for four minutes while he was face down on the floor.
