“The Square”
** 1/2 | A bag of ill-gotten gains and an impulsive plan wreak havoc on two lovers in this indie crime thriller “from the land down under.” Construction site manager Ray is so bad at being bad — be it cheating or thieving — you might think the title refers to him. It does — and doesn’t. The film and the darkly funny short that precedes it — “Spider” — herald director Nash Edgerton. Brother Joel Edgerton conceived the story and plays a professional firebug in “The Square.”R. 1 hour, 41 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“City Island”
*** | Andy Garcia is well into his 40s, a prison guard living with his family on City Island, a bucolic outcrop of the Bronx known mostly to its residents. Telling his wife he’s going to a poker game, Vince attends acting classes in Manhattan. His wife (Julianna Margulies) is convinced the poker games mean a mistress. But don’t get the idea “City Island” is a laff riot. For this story about these people, it finds about the right tone. They’re silly and foolish, as are we all, but deserve what happiness they can negotiate. PG-13. 1 hour, 40 minutes. Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
“The Back-up Plan”
** | Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe, a New York City pet-shop owner who decides to make a baby on her own. Zoe is inseminated in her doctor’s office, and that very day meets Stan, the most attractive man on planet Earth (Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin, who boasts a Tarzan physique and crack comic instincts). PG-13. 1 hour, 38 minutes. Colin Covert, McClatchy Newspapers
