Relatives say a Fort Carson soldier from New Jersey was killed on his third day in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense confirmed Tuesday that 20-year-old Army Spec. Pedro A. Millet Meletiche died Sunday during an operation in the Arghandab River Valley. He died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device.

Millet Meletiche was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
