An honor guard fired three rifle volleys Tuesday morning and a folded flag was handed to the family of Raymond Sawyer, despite the protests of veterans who argued Sawyer didn’t deserve a place in hallowed ground.

The service for Sawyer went ahead at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Sawyer, formerly of Arvada, will be interred with a marker correctly noting the Purple Heart he earned in World War II but not the Navy Cross he falsely claimed to have.

Sawyer died last month in an Arizona prison, where he was several years into a 13-year prison sentence for the murder of his second wife.
