Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. of Boulder has won the contract to build the next-generation remote- sensing satellite for DigitalGlobe, based in Longmont. Called WorldView-3, the satellite is the fourth high-resolution spacecraft built by Ball for DigitalGlobe. The amount of the contract was not disclosed.

“We started work on WV-3 today,” Ball spokeswoman Roz Brown said Monday.

Ball will build the spacecraft bus, integrate the ITT- built imaging system and perform all testing.

Brown estimated about 300 people will work on WorldView-3 at its peak. As for hiring, Brown said it depends on “other pending contract wins — again, we’re always fine-tuning the mix of engineers for specific programs.”

On Aug. 6, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency awarded a contract potentially worth $3.55 billion over 10 years to DigitalGlobe to provide high-resolution images of Earth. The contract includes the WorldView-3. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
