AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Air Force junior Tim Jefferson got the call to start at quarterback for a second consecutive year.
At least that’s the way it appears on the Falcons’ depth chart, but coach Troy Calhoun said that officially, he still hasn’t made up his mind.
“Every position still is fluid,” Calhoun said Monday. “We’re forever fluid. That’s the way it works on our football team.”
Jefferson and junior Connor Dietz battled for the starting job through preseason practice. But when Calhoun released his depth chart Monday, Jefferson came out the winner. Dietz will be the likely backup when the Falcons open their season Saturday against Northwestern State (La.) at Falcon Stadium.
Jefferson has played in 20 games and piled up 2,144 yards of total offense. He’s thrown for 10 touchdowns.
As a freshman in 2008, Jefferson took over the starting assignment after the fifth game of the season and led Air Force to the Armed Forces Bowl, where the Falcons lost to Houston 34-28. A year ago, Jefferson missed three games because of injuries. The Falcons were 7-3 with him as the starting QB, including a 47-20 rout of Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Footnote.
Air Force’s depth chart has Anthony Wright Jr. and Josh Hall at cornerback. Wright and Hall missed practice time during preseason camp because of injuries, Wright with bruised ribs and Hall with an ankle injury. Calhoun said he’s not certain either will play Saturday.
