Arapahoe, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2007, returns 15 starters, including eight on offense. . . . Warriors TE Will Ratterman is getting recruiting looks from the Big Sky Conference. . . . It’s Arapahoe’s third league in four years, having moved from the Continental to the Centennial and now the Big 6. . . . Raiders return 14 starters, notably QB Jaleel Awini, who has drawn interest from CU, and RB Jon Mathews, left, a Denver Post 5A all-state honorable mention a year ago. . . . Rangeview is considered the favorite in the new East Metro.
Bear Creek vs. Pomona
Friday, 7:30 p.m., North Area Athletic Complex
This used to be a regular on the Jefferson County circuit. Thankfully, the annual matchup, which also resulted in a 2009 quarterfinal, has been resumed despite the programs switching leagues. . . . Bear Creek’s latest starter in a long line of productive quarterbacks? Junior Sean Flanagan, brother of former all-stater Tommy. . . . Panthers, impressive in the runner- up finish a year ago, have impressive lines and are confident that new skill players are ready to step in. RB-LB Nick Allen and OL Ricky Flores, left, being asked to lead the way.
Regis Jesuit at Valor Christian
Friday, 7 p.m.
It’s the first big private-school matchup of the season and the first between the two parochial schools. . . . Regis Jesuit has won six of its past seven games and made the 2009 quarterfinals after starting the season 1-4. . . . Valor Christian opened in Zero Week and put up a fight before losing 28-19 to Grandview. . . . The Eagles, the defending 3A champion and now No. 4 in 4A, did not dress CU QB commitment Brock Berglund, left, against the Wolves. No word at midweek whether he’ll play against the Raiders.
Pueblo West vs. Dakota Ridge
Today, 7 p.m., Jefferson County Schools Stadium
Visiting Cyclones were 7-4 in 2009, including a first-round playoff loss to Greeley West. . . . Pueblo West, headed by popular coach Monte Pinkerton, left, is looking for senior QB Connor Roumph to add consistent passing to its ground game, a balance that is key in 4A. . . . Cyclones were the 2007 4A champion. . . . Dakota Ridge missed the 2009 playoffs after making the 2008 semifinals. . . . QB Bolton Howes in his third year as a starter. In all, the Eagles return 15 starters, eight on offense. The offensive line is incorporating some replacements.
Wheat Ridge vs. Ponderosa
Today, 7:30 p.m., Burt.com Stadium
In ever-changing Colorado, both programs used to play big-school football. . . . Over 2008-09, sixth-ranked Wheat Ridge earned a title and a semifinals appearance, respectively, and opens with what is considered to be an interesting group of players who have waited for their turn. Senior two-way back Nick Ossello, left, is an early leader. . . . With newbie Legend cutting into Ponderosa’s enrollment, the shift down is viewed as making 4A stronger. . . . Mustangs senior OL Sean Palinckx has great size — he’s 6-feet-7, 290 pounds.
Broomfield vs. Monarch
Friday, 7 p.m., Warrior Stadium
From their days in the old Skyline League, this has been one to view for not only those in Boulder County, but for all of 4A. . . . Broomfield senior RB Dan Geubelle, left, has a chance to lead the class in rushing. He cruised to 1,069 yards a year ago. . . . Monarch coach Phil Bravo, who earlier resurrected nearby Centaurus, is 117-26 heading the Coyotes, 12-1 a year ago, losing by a point to eventual champion Heritage. . . . TE Joe Kawulok has committed to Colorado State and is part of a top offensive front.
Thompson Valley vs. Mountain View
Friday, 7 p.m., Ray Patterson Field
Visiting 4A Eagles have much work to do with a new coach (Brian DeWall), an 11-game losing streak and 1-19 record over two seasons, but senior Dorian Brown, left, is worth watching. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder is a workhorse running back who will be asked to do a little of everything. . . . It’s an intracity matchup in Loveland. . . . Mountain View won last season’s opener 34-18. . . . 3A top-ranked Mountain View is coming off a 12-1 season, returns 12 starters and has QB Brennan Stine, a playmaker, at the controls.
Mead at Valley
Friday, 7 p.m.
Big news: It’s Mead’s first varsity football game in 50 years. . . . Now the Mavericks (they used to be called the Bulldogs), Mead’s doors closed in the spring of 1961. . . . New coach Martin Clark, left, is welcoming his first batch of juniors. They had only freshmen and sophomores a year ago in running to a 1-9 junior varsity mark. . . . Valley, in search of its first postseason spot since 2005, features Joe Dellenbach (6-6) at QB. . . . The Vikings return 15 starters, eight on offense, from a 4-6 team.
Lyons at Denver Lutheran
Saturday, 1 p.m.
Lyons, ranked No. 8 in 1A, is the odds-on favorite to capture the Metro North. . . . The Lions, under the direction of coach John Nichols, left, were 9-2 a year ago and return nine starters. Experience is good relative to the level — they have 10 seniors, including LB Brysen Daughton. . . . 1A 10th-ranked Denver Lutheran, 6-4 in 2009, has more returning experience, notably RB Ryan Langewisch, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark a year ago despite missing the final two games.
Walsh at Hoehne
Saturday, 7 p.m.
Walsh, which opened at No. 3, finished 7-2 after a 7-0 start in 2009. The Eagles, a favorite in the Ark Valley with Springfield, were highly ranked before injuries forced them to bail out to Swink in the division crossover game last season. . . . Coach Ronny Tate is old school — he always refuses to single out any of his players, but everybody knows about running back Laken Alley, left. . . . Hoehne, No. 4, was 4-5 in 2009, after losing stud Cody Roberts in Game 1. . . . The Farmers return six offensive and seven defensive starters.
