A man arrested on suspicion of DUI told a deputy that he was speeding and driving erratically to make it to a hospital before his son died.

Eric Repasy, 47, of Utah, lied, police said.

Repasy was pulled over at about 7 p.m. Wednesday on I-70 near Eagle by an Eagle County Sheriff’s deputy, a sheriff’s office release said.

Numerous drivers had called 911 to report a driver who was speeding, swerving, passing on the right, and cutting off other drivers, the sheriff’s office said.

When stopped, Repasy told the deputy the bogus story about a dying son.

“The deputy confirmed the story to be a lie,” the release said.

The deputy who arrested Repasy on suspicion of reckless endangerment, DUI, reckless driving, and speeding was a part of Gore Range DUI Task Force participating in a “Heat is On” campaign, the sheriff’s office said.

Repasy spent the night at the Eagle County Jail before posting a $1,000 bond.

The Gore Range DUI Task Force has made 27 DUI arrests since its heat campaign began August 20.

Other campaigns are going around the state this holiday weekend in an effort to make Colorado roads and highways safer, the sheriff’s office said.

“I hope that our efforts combined with help from the public and everyone’s good decision not to drink and drive we keep everyone safe this holiday weekend,” Eagle County Sheriff Joe Hoy said.
