The U.S. Coast Guard found an oil sheen on the Gulf of Mexico near the Mariner Energy Inc. platform that caught fire Thursday off Louisiana.
The “light rainbow sheen,” about 100 yards long and 10 yards wide, may be a remnant of oil washed off the platform by water used to douse the fire, Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Lehmann said Friday from New Orleans.
Investigators from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement are aboard the platform, known as Vermilion 380, to find the cause of the fire and confirm there are no leaks, he said. Denver Post wire services
