BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia underwent season-ending surgery for a broken bone in his left foot.

A screw was inserted into the foot in Friday’s operation. The 2008 AL MVP finished the season with 12 homers, 41 RBIs and a .288 batting average.

Strasburg undergoes surgery

PITTSBURGH — Nationals rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg had reconstructive elbow surgery that could keep him out of the starting rotation until the 2012 season.

Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the procedure in which a piece of ligament was taken from the right-hander’s left leg and transplanted into his pitching elbow.

Lee returns to Rangers after shot

MINNEAPOLIS — Cliff Lee returned to the Rangers after spending the previous two days in Dallas, hoping a cortisone shot in his ailing back will help him get back to his dominating self.

Lee is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today after which the team will determine if he will make his next scheduled start Tuesday.

The Rangers also agreed to terms with former NL all-star pitcher Mark Prior on a minor-league contract. Prior, who will turn 30 on Tuesday, hasn’t pitched in a major-league game since 2006.

Santana remains day to day

CHICAGO — Mets ace Johan Santana remains day to day with a strained left pectoral muscle. Manager Jerry Manuel said the injury is “nothing they think is serious” but is not sure if Santana will miss a start. He’s scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Nationals.

Footnotes.

Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto will miss the team’s series against the Cardinals to attend to what the team called a family emergency in the Dominican Republic. Manager Dusty Baker said he thought Cueto would be back in time for his next turn in the rotation Tuesday at Colorado.

• Twins right-hander Scott Baker will probably miss two starts because of tendinitis in his pitching elbow, manager Ron Gardenhire said.

• Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is day to day because of left biceps tendinitis.

• Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny will miss Tuesday’s start because of a bruised left hand. The Associated Press
