BOULDER, Colo.—A federal fire team has taken over management of a wildfire that’s destroyed 53 homes so far in the foothills near Boulder.

Authorities still haven’t completed surveying the damage in most of the 7,100-acre fire area so the number of houses lost could still rise Wednesday.

None of the roughly 3,000 people forced out of their homes by the fire likely will be allowed to return for at least two days.

Firefighters could get some help from the weather. There’s a chance of thunderstorms over the parched area but the storm system could also produce strong winds that could spread the fire.
