Regis Jesuit has won eight of its past nine games. A season-opening victory over Valor Christian came with a price — quarterback Luke Longfield separated a shoulder on the first play.

This will be Douglas County’s first return trip to French Field since being surprised 31-17 by Poudre in the 2008 quarterfinals. . . . The Huskies opened last week with a 27-0 whipping of Colorado Springs’ Doherty. Justin Hall caught two touchdown passes and Kai Perea ran for a TD. . . . As for the Lambkins, they were behind 20-0 at halftime at 4A Loveland, cut the deficit to 13 points after three quarters, then scored three TDs in the final 12 minutes. . . . QB Erik Brakke, left, threw for three TDs on only five completions.

Their Centennial League rivalry may be over, but these power teams welcome the chance to meet in a nonleague game. . . . Mullen, the two-time defending state champion, has won 20 games in a row: 10 in the regular season and 10 in the playoffs. In fact, the Mustangs’ last loss came in the 2008 regular-season finale, 17-10 to Grandview. . . . The Wolves, sparked on defense by Eddie Yarbrough, left, and special teams by Willy Hewitt, were idle last week after handling 4A Valor Christian in Zero Week.

Greeley West was 22-3 the last two seasons, losing both times in the postseason to Wheat Ridge. . . . Led by veteran coach Mark Roggy, the Spartans blew away the Denver Prep’s Montbello 41-6. . . . David Eddy ran for three touchdowns before halftime. . . . Monarch began 2010 as the preseason No. 1 team in 4A but fell 42-19 to old nemesis Broomfield. The Coyotes gave up two TDs on kick returns, one after a kickoff, the other after a punt. . . . Ryan Hamlin, left, and Ryan Muller, plan to get Monarch back on track.

No, it’s not a misprint — both teams have moved up from 2A and been able to keep up their nonleague rivalry. . . . A year after making the trip to Steamboat Springs and getting smoked by QB Austin Hinder (now at California) and the eventual 3A runner-up Sailors, Holy Family returned the favor as Connor Clay rushed for 100 yards and a TD in a 37-6 home victory. Clay was one of five Holy Family players to reach the end zone. . . . Levi Hammett, left, got Erie off to a good start last week with a TD, but Erie lost 28-13.
Palisade (1-0) vs. D’Evelyn (1-0)

Palisade had one of the more interesting outcomes in Week 1 — the 3A Bulldogs beat 5A Central (G.J.) 30-14. . . . The Bulldogs are thick at running back, including Isaac Cordova, and Luke McLean scored three times last week (two TDs rushing, one receiving). . . . D’Evelyn took down Conifer 48-17 in Week 1 as Caleb Flack, left, threw for six TDs, three to Matt Menard, who had seven receptions for 209 yards, including an 81-yarder. Flack passed for 415 yards. . . . D’Evelyn, an 8-3 team a year ago, led 41-7 at halftime.

Florence, up and down through the classes in recent seasons, is off to a crisp start. The Huskies had little trouble in handling Manitou Springs and Alamosa by a combined 77-20. . . . Huskies coach Mark Buderus, left, has been one of the small-school mainstays and John Alexander turned in 208 all-purpose yards in the 39-14 season-opening victory against Manitou Springs. . . . Western Slope’s Olathe, the 2008 state champion and 11-1 a year ago, was idle last week after trouncing Steamboat Springs 36-0 in Zero Week.

A late-summer evening on the northeastern plains and two of the traditional small- school powers going at it. . . . Burlington handled 2A Lamar in Week 1, winning 39-14. . . . The Cougars trailed 7-0 before running off 39 consecutive points. . . . Spencer Cure threw two touchdown passes to Coley David, left, who also had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. . . . Wray began with a 35-14 decision of Chase County, Neb. . . . The Eagles have 17 returning starters from a year ago, notably all-around star Jarret Cure.

The Bulldogs will make the all-too-familiar trip east on Interstate 70. . . . They opened with a 42-0 pounding of Nederland as quarterback Jordan Dodge passed for 160 yards and three touchdowns — each TD to Evan Steitz, who finished with four receptions for 77 yards. . . . New-look Limon, playing without 2009 Denver Post Gold Helmet winner Matt Brown for the first time in four years, opened with a 20-6 victory at Wiggins. . . . Brown’s brother, Jason, left, is one of 1A’s top players as a linebacker and tight end.
Idalia (1-0) at Flagler (1-0)

Idalia, the defending state champion, has won 13 games in a row and 22 of its past 25. . . . The Wolves, featuring Landon Shaffer, left, had little trouble in their opener, pounding Weldon Valley 55-14. . . . Flagler, another usual 8-man power, began with a 56-0 drubbing of Pikes Peak Christian. . . . However, the Panthers received tragic news a day later — junior Lance Rodwell was killed when he rolled his pickup truck off a Weld County road. The speed of the truck at the time of the accident is still being investigated.
