Blasts of color, roomy silhouettes, longer hemlines and higher waists are among the styles filling the runways at Fashion Week’s spring shows underway in New York. There’s a distinct 1970s vibe to some of the looks, underscored by such accessories as big sunglasses and hats, and full, frizzy hair, as shown by Marc Jacobs.
Diane von Furstenberg always channels a bit of that era — that’s when she first rose to prominence as a designer. In concert with new design partner Yvan Mispelaere, she showed bold prints and longer skirts.
You can’t blame Tommy Hilfiger for looking to the year 1985 because that’s when he showed his first collection. For his 25th anniversary, he continues to turn out updated preppy classics.
For those who prefer a more minimal aesthetic, such designers as Michael Kors and Derek Lam presented simple and relaxed silhouettes. Kors streamlined his collection to the point where he used only a few accessories: skinny leather or rope belts, banded leather sandals, bucket hats and big leather or jute bags. No muss, no fuss, just clean American sportswear. Suzanne S. Brown
