DENVER—Colorado Education Commissioner Dwight Jones says he is one of three finalists for the job of superintendent of Clark County School District in Las Vegas.

Jones said Thursday that he was recruited to apply and has been open about wanting to return at some point to being a school superintendent. The Las Vegas district has 310,000 students and is the nation’s fifth-largest.

State Board of Education Chairman Bob Schaffer says he supports Jones’ decision to pursue the opening, although he hopes the state doesn’t lose him.

Jones was appointed education commissioner in 2007. He has been a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent in districts around the country.
