BOSTON — After a summer full of trade rumors, there was always a chance Marc Savard wouldn’t be on the ice for the Bruins at the start of training camp. Turns out he won’t be, though not for the reason anybody expected.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Friday that Savard has been suffering from postconcussion syndrome for a couple of weeks. The star center was in Boston while the team was taking physicals, but he couldn’t work out and will not address the media.

Chiarelli would not reveal the exact nature of the symptoms.

“He’s in good spirits,” Chiarelli said. “I’ve talked to him. He’s in good spirits and he’s anxious to get back. We’re just being very cautious, and we’ll take it day by day.”

Savard initially suffered a concussion March 7 after being hit from behind by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke. Savard missed the rest of the regular season and did not return to the Bruins’ lineup until the first game of the club’s second-round playoff series against Philadelphia.

Huet homeless

CHICAGO — The Blackhawks are close to finding a place for goaltender Cristobal Huet to play this season and eliminating his $5.625 million annual salary cap hit.

General manager Stan Bowman said he hopes to assign Huet to a team in Europe within the next few weeks. Huet won’t be in training camp and could be claimed off waivers.

Huet, 35, is entering the third year of a $22.5 million, four-year contract he signed in July 2008.

Footnotes.

The Ducks signed left wing Matt Beleskey, who had 11 goals and seven assists last season as a rookie, to a two-year contract extension through the 2012-13 season.

• The Hurricanes signed Patrick O’Sullivan to a one-year contract that will pay the center $600,000 at the NHL level or $105,000 in the minors.

• The city of Glendale, Ariz., said a prospective buyer of the Coyotes, “in a show of good faith,” has deposited $25 million in an escrow account. The city said the buyer has asked for confidentiality because negotiations are ongoing, but there have been multiple reports that the city has been in talks with Chicago investor Matthew Hulsizer.
