COLORADO SPRINGSPUEBLOHIGHLANDS RANCH AURORA — Trailing 3-0 in the fourth quarter Friday night, Cheyenne Mountain came back to beat Liberty 5-3 at D-20 Stadium.
Indians punter Bret Helton pinned the Lancers at their 1-yard line with a 72-yard punt, then Jeremy Grooms tackled Liberty running back Shane Walker in the end zone to pull within 3-2 with 10 minutes to play.
Helton, also the Indians’ quarterback, then found Donivan Harville for a 37-yard completion on a key third-and-long on the ensuing drive to set up Ross Thompson’s game- winning 42-yard field goal with 5:30 to play.
“This was very interesting because of the score, but it was an odd game,” Cheyenne Mountain coach Kris Roberts told the Colorado Springs Gazette. “It was back and forth, and both offenses struggled to get into a rhythm.”
Lewis-Palmer 34, Pueblo Centennial 22 Colton Goeas rushed for 141 yards and four touchdowns and Ben Shaum passed for 192 yards and a score as 3A’s fourth-ranked Rangers prevailed over the No. 7 Bulldogs in a South Central League game.
Shaum also ran for 67 yards and a touchdown for Lewis-Palmer (3-0, 1-0). Pueblo Centennial fell to 2-1, 1-1.
Fountain-Fort Carson 35, Chatfield 21 The Davises, Anthony and Chris, combined for 202 yards and three touchdowns rushing as the 5A’s 10th-ranked Trojans (3-0) routed the Chargers (1-2) at Jefferson County Stadium.
Anthony Davis had 106 yards and two TDs, and Chris Davis had 96 yards and a score for Fountain-Fort Carson, which totaled 271 yards rushing and outgained Chatfield 423-158.
Rangeview 42, Gateway 17 Quarterback Jaleel Awini rushed nine times for 163 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another score as the Raiders rolled to their second straight win in the third annual Anvil Game, both teams’ opener in the new 5A East Metro League.
Rangeview (3-0 overall) spotted the Olympians (0-3) a 3-0 lead, then rolled up 42 unanswered points.
