Three hikers on Longs Peak today witnessed another man fall 300 feet from The Ledges to his death, according to a press release from Rocky Mountain National Park.
The fall happened at about 12:30 p.m. Rescuers were able to reach the body just before 3:30 p.m. but have not yet been able to recover the victim’s body.
Weather and resources permitting, rescuers expect to recover the body Sunday to transfer it to the Boulder County Coroner’s office, but rescuers will remain in the area overnight.
There is no identification of the victim yet.
The death appeared to be the third from a fall this year at Longs Peak. It is one of the more dangerous 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado because of a long approach, high winds and narrow ledges. Climbers also died in July and August. National Parks officials have said the peak has averaged about one death a year for some time.
