PUEBLO, Colo.—Colorado Rep. John Salazar says the Air Force needs to spend more time listening to residents before moving ahead with low-altitude training over northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.
Salazar tells The Pueblo Chieftain that he has asked the Air Force to extend public comment on a proposal for low-altitude training with C-130 and CV-22 aircraft out of Cannon Air Force Base in eastern New Mexico. Flights could fly as low as 200 feet above the ground. The proposal has sparked opposition from residents who fear flights could disrupt wildlife and ranching.
Salazar, a Democrat, also says a public meeting should be held in southern Colorado. A group of opponents rallied in Pueblo on Saturday. Another rally was expected Monday in Taos, N.M.
