Throwing out the first pitch to open the New York upstate fall classic Special Olympics games in Rochester, N.Y., was a pleasant formality for Tom Golisano. What mattered more to the Buffalo Sabres’ billionaire owner was the health care screenings and treatments athletes received before the competition began Saturday morning. Golisano demonstrated his commitment to the issue by donating $150,000 to improve doctor training to treat Special Olympians, whose medical needs often go unmet or are misdiagnosed. The contribution will help the Special Olympics’ Healthy Athletes program.
