Hunter Goodman’s all-star season has hit an August snag.
The Rockies placed the catcher retroactive to Saturday, with a left shoulder strain. Goodman originally hurt his shoulder on a swing during Colorado’s series in Arizona last week.
Goodman entered Tuesday ranked fifth in baseball with 34 homers. In a corresponding move, Colorado recalled catcher Braxton Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Fulford will serve as the backup to Brett Sullivan, who has been hitting the ball well since Goodman got hurt. Sullivan, who signed as a free agent with the Rockies in December, is coming off a strong road trip as he batted .316 (6-for-19) with three homers and eight RBIs during that stretch.
The trip to the injured list all but extinguishes the small possibility that was left that Goodman, amid his second straight all-star season, could make a run at a couple notable home run records. Now hurt, the Rockies’ single-season longball mark (49, shared by Larry Walker and Todd Helton) will surely continue to stand, as will the single-season National League home run record for a catcher of 45
Goodman’s already broken his own Rockies single-season homer record for a catcher this year while slashing .251/.320/.541 with an .861 OPS. Even though he’s hit more homers in ’26 than he did in ’25, he had a slightly better season last year, when he accumulated 3.7 bWAR (compared to 2.3 this year) while slashing .278/.323/.520.
He was the subject of rampant trade rumors leading into the early August deadline, but the Rockies held onto Goodman, as no team was willing to give Colorado a return that president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta felt justified dealing the slugger. Goodman, a fourth-round pick out of Memphis in 2021 who skyrocketed to the majors, is under club control through 2029.
