JUNEAU, Alaska — U.S. Senate hopeful Joe Miller says he will no longer answer reporters’ questions about his background and personal life, citing the campaign’s “viciousness.”
Reports in recent weeks have found that Miller, a fiscal conservative who has called for an end to the “welfare state,” received federal farm subsidies for land he owned in Kansas in the 1990s and that he and his wife got low-income hunting and fishing licenses when they moved to Alaska.
Miller, a Republican with Tea Party support, also acknowledged his family received Medicaid for a period and that his wife briefly got unemployment benefits.
Miller says this has become a distraction from the issues of the race. And he told reporters in Anchorage he intended to focus on those issues until the Nov. 2 election.
