DENVER—The Bureau of Land Management says it has completed its review of three nominations for oil shale research leases on federal land in Colorado and Utah and is forwarding them to state offices for the next phase of review.

BLM Director Bob Abbey said Wednesday that research from the potential second round of leases would help determine whether oil shale will be a commercially viable energy source and would answer questions about feasibility and environmental impacts.

Six research leases were awarded in an initial round in 2007.

The second round involves nominations for leases by ExxonMobil Exploration Co. and Natural Soda Holdings Inc. for land in Colorado and AuraSource Inc. for land in Utah.
