A fuel tank on a dump truck ruptured this afternoon, spilling gas onto U.S. Highway 40 near Golden, causing a traffic mess.
The incident happened about 2 p.m. near Heritage Square and reopened at about 5:30 p.m., said Karlyn Tilley, a Golden spokeswoman.
The truck was hauling asphalt and it was possibly overloaded, Tilley said. The truck’s axle snapped, which likely caused the fuel tank to rupture.
About 60 gallons of gas spilled on the highway, Tilley said.
Traffic was been shut down in both directions as Golden firefighters and a Colorado State Patrol hazardous material crew cleaned up the mess.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
There were no reported injuries.
