A mother was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison in the death of her 3-week old son in December 2009.
Crystal Eccleston, 28, had pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death.
According to a probable-cause statement, doctors at Children’s Hospital in Aurora who examined the infant when he arrived Dec. 15 said he had two skull fractures, profuse bleeding of the brain, bruises on the scalp and what appeared to be burns on his face and foot.
The brain swelling was so bad that doctors removed part of the infant’s skull. The child survived four days in the hospital before dying.
Eccleston was accused of contributing to her son’s death by failing to seek care for him.
Eccleston had originally told police it was about seven hours after she noticed the infant was unresponsive, until she took him to the hospital.
The child’s father, Travis Anderson, 27, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death.
Anderson is scheduled for trial in November in Denver District Court.
