WASHINGTON — Gilbert Arenas’ sore right ankle kept him out of practice for the third consecutive day Tuesday as the Wizards prepared for their season opener.

Coach Flip Saunders said he will “have to see what happens in the next 48 hours” to determine if Arenas plays Thursday night against the Magic.

No. 1 overall pick John Wall and veteran Kirk Hinrich would be the starting guards if Arenas doesn’t suit up — and possibly even if he does.

Arenas sprained the ankle during training camp, then missed two preseason games with a strained right groin as he attempts to come back from last season’s 50-game suspension for a felony gun conviction.

Knicks workouts scrutinized

NEW YORK — The Knicks conducted secret workouts of college players that might have circumvented NBA draft rules, Yahoo Sports reported.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league will investigate the allegations.

Turner to begin on bench

PHILADELPHIA — 76ers coach Doug Collins decided against putting Evan Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, in the starting lineup for tonight’s opener against Miami.

The 76ers will start Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala in the backcourt, plus forwards Jason Kapono and Elton Brand and center Spencer Hawes.
