DENVER—Deputy Colorado Education Commissioner Robert Hammond will take over as interim commissioner when Dwight Jones leaves for his new job as superintendent of Las Vegas-area schools.
The state Board of Education approved Hammond’s appointment Wednesday and announced that Jones’ last day as commissioner will be Dec. 13.
Jones has been Colorado’s education commissioner since 2007. The Clark County School District, which includes Las Vegas, chose him as its new superintendent in September.
Jones recommended Hammond as the interim commissioner. Hammond was hired as deputy in 2008 and was chief operations officer, associate superintendent and division director of operations in two school districts before that.
