A man was stabbed in the back outside his house west of Longmont on Tuesday night, and police say the suspect is at large.

Authorities responded at about 9:30 p.m. to a report of shots fired in the area of 12637 66th St., and they found a man who had been stabbed in his lower back, according to Sgt. Mike Linden of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, Eric Ackerman, 63, told police he heard a noise, grabbed his handgun and went outside to investigate, when someone stabbed him in the back. He did not get a description of the suspect.

Ackerman told police he fired several shots at the assailant as the man fled, but he doesn’t believe any of the bullets struck him.

Ackerman was conscious and breathing and was taken to Longmont United Hospital.

“It is unusual,” Linden said. “There’s a lot of things that don’t make sense, and we won’t know more until detectives have a chance to talk to everyone involved.”
