COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Gov.-elect John Hickenlooper is reaching out to the Republican stronghold of Colorado Springs as he prepares to take office.

Hickenlooper traveled to El Paso County Thursday to speak to 300 civic leaders for the Downtown Partnership’s annual mayor’s breakfast.

The Gazette reported that he told the crowd that the only way to overcome the state’s budget problems is to improve Colorado’s business climate and that he hopes to have both Republican and Democratic support in his new job.

The Denver mayor wants business owners and civic leaders from each of Colorado’s 64 counties to help create a state economic development blueprint, rather than have state leaders give their ideas to local governments.
