Nathan Kafer gave the Regis men’s soccer team a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, but that was the high point for the Rangers as Colorado Mines stormed back for a 5-1 win Friday in an NCAA Division II Tournament first-round game at CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden.
Chike Sullivan and Alex Nass each scored twice for the third-ranked Orediggers (17-1-2). Sullivan tied the game in the 11th minute with a long shot off a pass from Tesho Akindele, and Nass gave Mines the lead for good in the 17th minute from 25 yards out.
Baski Baker had a goal and assist for 11th-ranked Regis, which ended its season 14-3-4.
The Orediggers on Sunday play Midwestern State, which beat Truman State 3-2 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
A brotherly hat trick.
The Colorado Mammoth has all three Gajic brothers in the fold after forwards Alex and Ilija Gajic signed three-year contracts, joining Nenad, who signed previously. Also, the National Lacrosse League team activated Curtis Palidwor from the injured reserve list.
Alex Gajic ranked third last season among rookie scorers with 48 points (26 goals). Older brother Ilija had 16 goals in only 10 games because he missed six with Crohn’s disease. He is fully recovered.
Palidwor was slated to be the Mammoth’s starting goalie in 2010 but suffered an eye injury 21 minutes into the first game that sidelined him for the rest of the season. He has a 76 percent career save percentage.
