Elephants, rhinos and tapirs will someday stroll 12 feet above a public pathway at the Denver Zoo using a bridge installed Thursday.
The span connects two habitats in the Asian Tropics exhibit, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2012.
The bridge, 17 feet wide and 55 feet long, is designed to resemble “an abandoned railroad bridge that has been aging for years in the jungle” and can support 6 tons.
The bridge is called Peter and Ella’s Crossing in honor of a financial gift from the Bardsley Foundation, which was founded by Peter and Betsy Luce. Their daughter, zoo board member Lynn Luce Kitt, has twin children named Peter and Ella, according to the zoo. The Denver Post
