The Metro State women’s soccer team defeated rival Colorado Mines 5-4 on penalty kicks Friday to win an NCAA Division II Tournament first-round game at Dirks Field in Durango.
Metro (12-5-3) advanced to meet host Fort Lewis, which received a first-round bye, in a second-round game Sunday. Each team made 4-of-5 kicks in the shootout, setting up “sudden death.” Metro keeper Sarah Tanous stopped Aubrey Bagley on Mines’ (11-6-4) sixth attempt, and Ashley Nemmers drilled a shot inside the left post to give Metro the win.
• Regis (15-4-1) won its first-round game, defeating New Mexico Highlands 3-2 in Winona, Minn. The 20th-ranked Rangers advanced to Sunday’s second round against host Winona State.
Phan leads Roadrunners to win.
The 12th-ranked Metro State volleyball team advanced to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21) win over Mesa State in Kearney, Neb. Roadrunners’ defensive ace Ngoc Phan posted a four-set career-high with 33 digs.
Metro will play Nebraska-Kearney in today’s championship at 3 p.m.
DU’s men’s soccer team upset.
The University of Denver men’s soccer team (9-6-4) is hoping for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after the top-seeded Pioneers were upset 3-1 by host and No. 5-seed Sacramento State (9-4-7) in a semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.
