WASHINGTON — A compromise designed to end a nasty political fight in the Democratic Party has left an important contingent dissatisfied — the Congressional Black Caucus.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has forged a tentative deal in which she would remain the party’s leader in the House when Democrats become the minority in the next Congress, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland would take the No. 2 spot and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn would move down to the third-ranking position, which Pelosi has called “assistant leader.”
Clyburn, of South Carolina, a congressional veteran and member of the black caucus, accepted the position but is still discussing what his new role will entail.
Several caucus members suggested they would withhold their votes from Pelosi if more details are not provided about what Clyburn will be responsible for.
