When it came to commissioning the latest presidential portrait for the State Capitol, the selection committee stayed well within conventional bounds, choosing English- born artist Sarah Boardman of Colorado Springs.
She was selected from among four finalists to paint President Barack Obama. His visage will join the other 43 presidential portraits by the late Lawrence Williams in the Gallery of the Presidents on the third floor of the capitol rotunda.
The $10,000 commission is privately funded, with former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife, Wilma, providing the lead gift for the project. The portrait is expected to be completed in April and dedicated before the 2011 legislative session ends in May.
