An off-duty Colorado State Patrol trooper leaped into frigid waters today to save a child who had fallen through the ice on a Greeley pond.
Trooper Dan Haley was with his family at the Greeley Family FunPlex, a recreation center, at about 4 p.m. when he saw 10-year-old Brenndan Daviet break through the ice covering a pond near the center, according to a state patrol news release. Air temperatures at the time were in the mid-40s, but the water temperature was near-freezing.
When Haley ran out onto the pond to rescue Daviet, the ice beneath him gave way, too. But Haley managed to reach Daviet and pull him from the water, then struggle back to shore, according to the release.
Both Daviet and Haley, a 3-year veteran of the patrol, were taken to the North Colorado Medical Center and treated for hypothermia.
